We learned about the scale of the attack by the Japanese on the United States navy fleet that was stationed there. The story goes that in the late 1930’s and early 1940’s, Japan wished to grow as a nation. As is a relatively small chain of island few natural resources, they were taking over other parts of East Asia to gain access to resources. They saw the America as a barrier to this growth and so decided that if they sunk the US Navy fleet there would be no barrier to their growth ambitions. In very crude and simple terms, the Japanese were stuck in scarcity thinking. They were fearful that a lack of resources would prevent them from growing.
As history shows, bombing the Navy was not such a good idea. Of the 100 odd navy ships in Pearl Harbour on the day of the attack only 18 were sunk or ran aground. After the attack, and within the following 12 months, all but three ships had been refloated and put back to work. Rightly so, before the attack the Japanese military had misgiving about bombing the US navy and indeed these were realised. The US got a heck of a fright after the bombings and in pretty short order all of America got to work. And as they say, the rest is history. Crudely speaking, one could suggest that the fear and scarcity motivated both Japan and the USA to act as they did. And as history has shown since 1941, there is not a lack of resources. Since the end of WW2 both the USA and Japan, and a good many other countries have found peaceful ways to grow and develop their economies. It is amazing what we as humans can do when with feel we have our back to the wall. I know that scarcity can at time appear real. And also, that the results of scarcity thinking can be both horrendous and amazing. This is the case today for millions of people in many different situations. The thing is though, when we flip our awareness from scarcity to abundance thinking, equally amazing things happen.
